7 Rip-offs and 20 Worst Drinks

Imelda sent me this great article on ways that consumers get ripped-off in the supermarket.  Have you fallen for any of them?  I have a friend who swears by 5-hour energy drinks.  Now I know that I can just offer her a cup of coffee and save her a lot of money.

I thought you might also find this interesting - the 20 worst drinks in America.  Have you had any of them?  Did you realize what you were consuming (in grams of sugar, etc.)?

1 Rockstar Energy drink = the sugar in 6 Krispy Kreme donuts. Wow.

Don't even think about having a Dairy Queen Moolatte.

  1. This is completely insane to me. I feel like consumers are unable to drink anything these days. For the most part, people know that these drinks are unhealthy, but I do not think they realize that they are consuming the amount equivalent for an entire meal. I was most surprised about the Sobe green tea because I feel that that is deceptive to consumers because they feel that by drinking "green tea" it is healthy. However, they are greatly mistaken. Again, this just shows that consumers need to be careful and read the "fine print" on EVERYTHING!

  2. I agree with Christie in regards to the green tea. It's one thing to have that high a sugar content in an energy drink, where the consumer is expecting it, but it's another to label a product with a "healthy" name and then fill it with sugars.
We really do need to start reading every label of everything we eat AND drink!

  3. This just goes to show that you have to read the ingredients and nutrition facts carefully and can't trust what the label says. I never realized how bad some of the drinks are and its crazy what the drinks are equivalent to. I'll definitely think twice before drinking energy drinks and some of the other drinks.

  4. The FunYuns rip-off is alarming, especially since there are probably so many other junk foods out there that offer similar value (or lack thereof). But then again, as consumers we should become more aware of how lightweight packaging feels to make sure we get bang for our buck...

Speaking of bang for your buck, I also swear by 5-hour energy. I refuse to buy them from USD for $3.50 a bottle... so I buy them in bulk at costco: 24-pack for $35. Use sparingly :)

  5. Going through the 20 worst drinks was shocking. I know most of us assume that triple thick milkshakes are not healthy but seeing it compared side by side to how many apple pies it is equivalent to is absurd. seeing drinks directly compared to the amount of food they equal really made opened my eyes. Even the Arizona iced teas contained such high calorie levels. I know many people who drink those in addition to their meals. Drinks like that are often so convenient and easy to drink and many don't realize actually the amount of calories and sugar they are actually ingesting.

  6. A lot of information presented in this article was not all that surprising. The organic food, cereal boxes with cartoons, funions... obvioulsy not worht the $4. This article is important however for consumers who are anaware of the ingredients. It goes to show everyone just how important it is to read and understand the labels of items you are buying, and the amount of money that they are spending. The 20 worst drinks article was the most alarming to me. I am a fan of coffee and 5 hour energy, but I do not drink energy drinks so I was quite surprised with the facts about 5 hour energy products, what a waste!

  7. when i first had 5 hour energy, it didnt do anything to me but this article really it only has barely the same amount of caffeine as coffee? i myself drink a lot of coffee and used to drink energy drinks so maybe thats why it did not affect me. i believe these advertisers say that their products are so special and do these crazy things to you, but it is so simple and it is all in the head. for example, 5 hour energy puts some caffeine and people drinking it has that mentality they will get all this energy, but in reality they are not.
